WALBRIDGE THE LOGICAL REPUBLICAN
CANDIDATE FOR GOVERNOR.
-------------------------
Whilst the Republican party of Missouri has within its ranks, a
number of gifted, and able men, qualified in every way to discharge the
duties devolved upon the Governor of the State; there is one man whom
existing conditions, and the "logic of events" single out as the "avail-
-able man" to lead our " conquering hosts" to victory in November next.
That men is Cyrus P. Walbridge, exmayor of the City of St. Louis.
It will be conceded that the city, and county of St. Louis, will be
one of the "great battle grounds" of the campaign.
That it should be made the headquarters of the State Committee and
the "focal point" from which would radiate the forces, and influences
which shall direct, and dominate the campaign, seems unquestionable,
when we consider existing, and prospective conditions.
Its central location, accessability, special rates of transportation,
great concentration of Missourians and others, at that point durIng the
Worlds Fair, will render it the "political Mecca" of the nation pending
the campaign.
In view of the fact that the candidate who shall lead the ticket shal
be so circumstanced, that he can give his whole time, and attention to
the campaign, without too great personal sacrifice, it is important
that he should reside at campaign headquarters, where he will de [be] in direct
touch with the State Committee, and with the City Comittee. In regard
to the qualifications essential to fit a candidate for the executive
office of Governor of a great state like Missouri, under normal conditions;
to say nothingof the anarchy which now reigns within her borders, he
should be possessed of "executive ability and experience."
The ablest man in the state without these qualifications, would be
at a loss until he acquired them. Mr. Walbridge successful administra
tion as mayor of the fourth city of the Union, has demonstrated his
possession of the qualifications mentioned.
To make a successful campaign our candidate must also possess a
knowledge of the political histoyy [history], of the state and nation, and forensic
ability to enable him to meet successfully on the hustings, the ablest
man the opposition can nominate. This our proposed candidate can do.
