Eastport Iowa Aug. 17, 1861
Mr M. U. Payne,
Dear Uncle-
I rec'd your letter
on the 6th, and started for Kansas on the
7th.
James Woods promised to pay that note
the 8th of September. His name is not at all
good. I was told and he did not deny it
that he had made a Deed conveying all
of his property to his relations. He said however
that as you had been so liberal with him
that he would certainly pay you.
Thomas H. Shaunon paid the $75.00
Seventy five dollars - he said you promised
to ("make" stricken) give ["give" written above stricken word] him a Bond for a Deed when
he paid it. He told me to speak to you
about it.
D. Butler the Governor Elected told
me that he would write to me & let me know
whether he would take the Land at Pawnee
City. Said if he ["could" stricken] concluded
to take it. He would give the Cash down-
(Would you be willing to take any less for it
if the money was all paid down?) I told him
