Camp near Holly Springs, Miss
November 1st A.D. 1862
Major Charles Sterne
Carroll County Mo, Dear Friend,
We have addopted
this medium to communicate to you the melancholy intelligence
of your Son's death. He was wounded on the 4th
day of October In the battle of Corinth He was struck
by a Minnie ball on the left arm passing through
the arm and penetrating the skull behind the left
Temple. He was borne off the field by 2 of the company
none of us having been near him at the time we could give
him no assistance. He was in a stooping posture
and shot by one of the Enemie's sharp shoters. He was
then conveyed to the hospital. John H. Clark accompaning
him & remained with him until his death.
We received the sad news of his death
through Mrs Prichard who visited his grave and
who, did not until she arrived here know the
lamentable fate of her husband one brave Colonel
We have not been able to learn the particulars of John's
death as Clark has not returned. John was 1st
Lieutenant in our company. He commanded
the [ms illegible] admiration of the whole company
And as to military skill he was surpassed by none
In the death of John we feel that we have
lost a kind and generous Officer and our best
friend in the army For when we were in want
of anything we had only to name it to John and
it was furnished. And when we were despondent
he would always endeavor to revive us for he was
ever cheerful And long will we gratefully
remember our friend and true comrade in arms
and if we fall to fall as he did bravely discharging
our duty as soldiers.
