Johnson's Island Augt 30th 1863
My Dear Cousin
I was truly delighted yesterday at receving
your kind and most welcomed letter of the 24th Inst.
and I can assure you that though we are seperated and
all communication has been cut off for the last
two years, you have not been forgotten, and I pray
that the time will soon come that our country will
be restored to peace. I am truly tired of prison life,
but I submit cheerfully as it is one of the consequences
of war. I hope some arrangements will be made
soon for exchange of prisoners and we once more
restored to our loved Dixie. I think the prospects are
somewhat cheering from the last news. Your Uncle
I A Landrum & Clark entered service with me in May 1861, Mr L
left service Augt following on account of his health, his health
has since recovered, he has never entered service since, Clark
was made Quarter Master of the Regt to which I belong
soon after he entered service, which position he now
holds. he was with us in Penn, but got his train out safely,
I forgot to mention in my letter to Cousin John Herndon
that Wm M Strange Son of J M Strange was in service and in the
fight at Gettysburg but as he did not belong to my Regt I dont
know what became of him. R C & A W Strange are still in
Palmyra. I saw all of our friends in May last they were
well & doing well. I received a letter from my Wife Friday written
the 8th Inst. she said all Relations & friends were well. My kindest
love to your Father Mother & Children & all relation, tell your Father
to write to me, you ["me" written above "you"] must write again when you receive this, I am
glad to hear from you all Your affectionate Cousin
Archs: [Archelaus] Perkins
