As a general thing the slaves in our section
of Missouri were well treated. I can remember but
one instance where an owner gave his slave, a girl
of about sixteen, unusual punishment, and for this
he was cautioned by his slave owning neighbors that
it must not occur again. Yet, among the more intelligent
negroes there was that desire for freedom
inherent in the breats of all mankind, white brown ["brown" written above line] yellow
or black. A notable example of this was Abe
Sportsman, whose master was a good, kind man,
but Abe who as about one-quarter Indian, and
the most perfect ["speciman of" stricken] man physically I ever
saw, longed and hoped for freedom. So he, with
two other companions, made a break one Saturday
night, this giving them two nights and one day's start
before their absence became known, their masters supposing
they were with their wives who belonged to
different owners. They made for the Iowa line,
and as they could travel by night only, their progress
was necessarily slow. They also suffered much
from hunger, having to live on such food ["food" written above stricken "vegetables"] as
