The Rural New Yorker in an article on emigration W est, thus speaks of Missouri : "Among the Wcsti'tn Status, taken as a whole, we believe uo one ia destined to outstrip 'Free Missouri' on the road to greatness. Geographically she is the central State of the Union ; tho Missis sippi rolls by her eastern bolder, and the Missouri divides her domain. Her lands are mainly rolling, w ithout being hilly : they are well watered and timbered, and fertile. Now here are there more beaut i-ffil prairies. Her climate is that in which can be grown cotton, sugar cane, tobacco, wheat, corn, grapes, and all the hardy fruits of the North. To the purposes ol the stock and wool grower, no climate or land is more suitable. Through her territories pass the great central lines of railway that w ill Stretch from ocean to ocean, and in a short time time her products can reach the Pacific with a facility equal to that by m htch they now pass to the Atlan tic and the (jinl ol Mexico.' An observer thus tells how iho track lay iu.j on tike railroad is done: "A small ear having been loaded in the same manner and with the same precision as the large ones had been, was run forward to the end of the track by horse-power. A couple of feet from the end of the rails already i ii.! down, i lie A.-. the car at once. The process was continued as rapidly ns a man would walk. Behind the car. followed a man dropping spikes, another setting the ties well under the beads of the raiJs and thirty or forty others driving in the spikes and stain ping the esfth trader the ties. The moment that one car was emptied of its iron, a number ol men seized it and threw il off the track into the ditch and the second followed on with its load." Fmigkation to MtSBWOBX A heavy tide of emigration from Now York and other Eastern States is now directing itself towards Missouri. Through her territories pass the great central lines of railway that w ill Stretch from ocean to ocean, and in a short time time her products can reach the Pacific with a facility equal to that by m htch they now pass to the Atlan tic and the (jinl ol Mexico.' The artesian well at the Insane Asylum. St. Louis, has now reached a depth of 2,-038 feet, and salt water of a fine ftawor is sues from -it.
