| Synopsis |
Betty Cooper Hearnes was born on July 24, 1927. Her interest in politics goes back to her early family life, and with this interest and experience she naturally contributed to her husbands lengthy and multifaceted political career. She was First Lady of Missouri from 1965-1973, and served as a Democrat in the Missouri House from 1979-1988. For her most recent biographic entry, see the Official Manual of the State of Missouri, 1987-1988. I met with Mrs. Hearnes on a sunny afternoon in April at the Warren E. Hearnes museum in Charleston, Missouri. We settled into the museums back room, which seemed to also serve as Mrs. Hearnes office. She is still very active in state and community affairs, and the interview trip itself (involving two other interviewees) centered around when she could find time to schedule the session. Five telephone calls to Mrs. Hearnes during the interview reflected the busy schedule she maintains. These interruptions, however, posed only a minor inconvenience, and really did not disrupt the flow of the interview, nor of Mrs. Hearnes recollections. |
