Launching its first issue on January 22, 1870, the Moniteau County Democrat “resolved to furnish” its readers with a “local, Democratic paper, relying upon the patriotism of the people of Central Missouri to give them such aid and patronage as will sustain them in their new and laudable enterprise.”
Stressing the expense of starting a new press, the Democrat called on its friends for financial support as well as inviting them to “aid us with their communications from all parts of the county, that we may be able to give all the local news that would be of interest.”
When J.D. Adams left the editorship of the paper, it changed titles, becoming the California Democrat.
