
The Lamar South-West Missourian proclaimed itself to be “a family newspaper—devoted to the home-circle, choice miscellany, agriculture, news, politics and the interests of Barton County." Like many of its contemporaries, the South-West Missourian was compelled to address its readers and remind them to pay their dues. In the February 23, 1871 issue, the editor declared: “Not that we care about ourselves, but our creditors do. Would you rather that we went to gaol, and you go free than pay your debts and keep us moving?”
