About this collection

Union Republican Tribune maskhead

The first issue of the Republican Tribune was published on March 7, 1919.  The new paper was a consolidation of The Republican Headlight and The Franklin County Tribune.  The name was a combination of the titles from the two papers in order to maintain the identity of both papers.  The Republican Tribune was a partnership with Augustus and Herbert Steinbeck and Guy W. Jeffries as editors.  The Steinbecks grew up in Franklin County.  “We know the citizenship of the county fairly well and we know of no place where people are more loyal to home, family, school, church, and state, than in this county.  This makes men and women, the noblest work of God.  We shall in our humble way try to foster and nourish these noble qualities by advocating and standing up for what is right.  We trust and ask that our friends and patrons will stand with us in these undertakings.  We need your help and support and we trust we shall always merit it.”
